Calm Your Nerves Before Speaking
Shake off the sweaty palms and take physical command of the room. Inside: three foolproof ways to physically prepare for a big talk, and a look at DHL's heartwarming holiday storytelling.
Simple tricks to feel confident and in control. How to physically prepare for a big talk Lately I've been working with a lot of founders and entrepreneurs, helping them prepare for major pitches. No matter how confident they are, one thing always sneaks in: nerves. I'll never forget one founder so jittery he nearly toppled out of his chair from fidgeting. A mindful pause, closing his eyes, and a few deep breaths helped him find his footing — and he nailed his pitch. Three foolproof ways to physically prep: Breathe like you mean it — slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for four. This calms your mind, lowers your heart rate, and gives your voice a steady foundation. Loosen up, literally — tension creeps into your shoulders, neck, and jaw. Roll your shoulders back, tilt your neck side to side, shake out your hands. It keeps you from that stiff, robot-like feeling on stage. Ground yourself — feel your feet planted on the floor. Imagine roots growing from your feet into the ground, anchoring you. This keeps you steady and present even when the nerves kick in. Remember, nerves aren't your enemy — they're just excitement in disguise. With these tips, you'll channel that energy into confidence and clarity. What I'm loving: spreading holiday cheer through brand storytelling It warms my spirit to hear about company initiatives like DHL's "Operation Holiday Cheer," a heartwarming tradition of more than 11 years where the company donates its global shipping network to deliver Christmas trees, gifts, and festive greetings to U.S. soldiers stationed overseas — alongside personal messages from families, creating meaningful connection during the season.
